India launches first ISRO space laboratory

http://www.themanufacturer.com/articles/india-launches-first-isro-space-laboratory/

This is a great news actually for all people around the world. As people know, India is making a great progress in this field. The hugely successful Mars Orbiter Mission which was done by the ISRO at a very less cost when compared to the similar mission of  the US.

Infact India has shown the world that many such missions can be successfully accomplished at a less cost but in a successful way by India. Now there are several countries who are launching satellites using the ISRO facility.

Space laboratory can give us many more inputs about the space and also grab vital data which is required for further exploration of the outer space.

Toyota Launches Hydrogen-Fueled Sedan

http://www.manufacturing.net/news/2015/09/toyota-launches-hydrogen-fueled-sedan-0?et_cid=4816342&et_rid=54661085&type=headline

I see this as a really good initiative by Toyota to actually work on this new technology where the car uses the hydrogen as the fuel. This makes sure that Toyota works on this technology extensively.

This will save the non renewable energy sources which life can be extended for more years when compared to using just these conventional fuels to run vehicles.

Japanese manufacturers automate to meet growing demand for aircraft parts

http://www.themanufacturer.com/articles/japanese-manufacturers-automate-to-meet-growing-demand-for-aircraft-parts/

I totally agree with you. The automation of aerospace or aviation industry is very important when compared to other industries. When such an excellent technology is employed for this, it augurs well for the industry. The automation simply makes the entire process flow more accurate and keeps all the process executed within the given deadlines.

It also makes sure the human effort reduces, makes them to concentrate on keeping the process on track rather than wasting the energy in lifting the heavy loads. This ensures they give their 100% on the work they do without consuming much energy which ensures they are not exhausted during the ending stages of their work time.

Executive Summary for Assignment 3

  1. 4K Video Drives Up LPDDR4 Densities:                                                                        The Samsung high end technology will be very beneficial for the people in the long run. These days most people want everything on the go. The mobile apps are extensively used for almost everything. This necessitates the need for a high end phone with good battery back up and also high memory. This is precisely what Samsung are working hard to make it a reality.                                                                                                         Also if such high end technology are integrated into automobile then such sophisticated systems can avoid accidents, keep a track on the maintenance of the car which are again very helpful to people.
  1. Tesla rolls out autopilot mode on Model S:                                                                    The autopilot car unveiled by Tesla takes us into the future of cars. Automated cars are the future of car. But there is an exception. Although the autopilot cars drive on their own, there should be a person who knows driving who is at the wheels while on autopilot mode to maneuver any software technical error by the software which can lead to accidents.                                                                                                                       Also such high technology cars should be cost effective and affordable for common man in the future. The people concerned with this technology should go for cost effective way of manufacturing such cars.                                                                                               Also people should think about the issues related to insurance and other legal things if the car meets with an accident while on autopilot mode. This is very important. Without this these cars cannot hit the market in a big way. The concerned people should decide about who is legally responsible for such accidents. As this is a serious issue.
  1. Attaining functional safety:                                                                                              The certification agencies for who certify that a standard processes are used to manufacture a product with adequate safety features should be careful in analyzing the products. They must ensure the companies are more focused on the quality and safety practices while manufacturing a product.                                                                      Also these agencies must check how the products eradicate the predictable failures and also how they account for random failures of the product.Usually the backup procedures followed are important because those processes are not proper then it leads to huge damages.

Assignment 3

  1. Discuss the importance of quality team works, and team building.

A team is a group of people with common collective goal. A team has to be composed of those people who are most likely to be able to satisfy the team’s mission effectively and efficiently.

An effective team building is a 4 step process. They are:

Asses: Asses the teams’ developmental needs.

Plan: Plan team building activities on the needs of the team.

Execute: Execute those team building activities.

Evaluate: Evaluate the results of those activities.

Building a team creates more opportunities for team members to work in cooperation with each other, share the work among the team, builds trust among the members, promotes better communication skills, multiplies the potential of individual members, creates a healthy challenge within the team, it promotes mutual support for the team members and also allows participation of each individual.

  1. How would you handle conflicts in quality teams?                                                            Conflict will occur even in the best teams. Even when all the members agree on the goal, there can be differences in the means to accomplish the goal. The team leaders then should go by these mentioned rules. They are:
  • Plan and work to establish a culture where individuality and dissent are in balance with teamwork and cooperation.
  • Establish a clear criteria for deciding when the decision will be made by individuals and when they will be made by the team.
  • Don’t allow individuals to build personal empires or to use the organization to advance personal agendas.
  • Encourage and recognize individual risk taking behavior that breaks the organization out of unhelpful habits and negative mental frameworks.
  • Encourage healthy, productive competition and discourage unhealthy counterproductive competition.
  • Recognize how difficult it can be to ensure effective cooperation and spend the energy necessary to get just the right amount of it.
  • Value constructive dissent and encourage it.
  • Assign people of widely differing perspectives to every team or problem.
  • Reward and recognize both dissent and teamwork when they solve problems.
  • Reevaluate the project, problem or idea when no dissent or doubt is expressed.
  • Avoid hiring people who think they don’t need help, who don’t value cooperation or who are driven by the desire to be accepted.
  • Ingrain into new employees the need for balance between the concepts of cooperation and constructive dissent.
  • Provide ways for employees to say what no one wants to hear.
  • Realistically and regularly assess the ability and willingness of employees to cooperate effectively.
  • Understand that some employees are going to clash, so determine where this is happening and remix rather than wasting precious organization energy trying to get people to like each other.
  • Ensure that the organizations value system and reward or recognition systems are geared towards cooperation with constructive dissent rather than dog eat dog competition or cooperation at all costs.
  • Teach employees how to manage both dissent and agreement.
  • Quickly assess whether a conflict is healthy or destructive, and take immediate steps to encourage the former and resolve or eliminate the latter.
  1. How do you reward quality achievements in a team?

An organization’s attempts to institutionalize teamwork fails unless it includes implementation of an appropriate compensation system. Employees are still compensated as individuals. The most successful compensation systems combine both individual and team pay.

With such a system, all employees receive their traditional individual base pay. Then there are incentives that allow employees to increase their income by surpassing goals set for their individual performance. Finally, other incentives are based on team performance. In some cases, the amount of team compensation awarded to individual team members are based on their individual performance within the team.

Non-monetary rewards can also be effective incentives. Widely used nonmonetary rewards include movie tickets, gift certificates, time off, event tickets etc. Before awarding nonmonetary rewards, the company should do a survey about the interest of their employees and then arrange for these rewards.

Rewarding process

  1. How do you communicate effectively?                                                                   Communication is the transfer of a message thati is both received and understood. A message maybe sent by a person and received by another but until the message is understood by both, no communication has occurred.                                           Effective communication means that the message is received, understood and acted on in the desired manner. It is the sender’s responsibility to ensure that there is effective communication. It is a higher order of communication. It involves receiving, understanding and acting on the message. This means that the effective communication may require persuasion, motivation, monitoring and leadership on the part of managers.
  1. Why are listening skills important?                                                                         Listening involves perception. Effective listening means receiving the message, correctly decoding it and accurately perceiving what it means. In a business organization, listening is key to effective working relationships among employees and between management and staff. Listening skills also impact a company’s interaction with customers and other businesses. The advantages of having good listening skills are:       Gain Information: This enables to acquire key information which can enable a person to make key business decision from that information.
  • Develop Trust: This is very important if a person is working in a team. Listening to team members strengths, weaknesses enables a team to work properly and also when the team lead is laying down the deadlines and sharing the data about the requirement and deadlines of the project it is essential for everyone to listen to them. These things makes all the members of team to build trust among each other which is vital for a team.
  • Maintain Reputation: This is important when the sales team is meeting the customers. If they listen to their requirements properly, they can produce products meeting their customer requirements. When they do not listen properly, products does not meet the requirement of the customers and also there are situations when the customers send their requirement through phone. So listening to the requirements builds good relationship among customers which enhances the company reputation.
  • Reduce Conflict: Conflicts arise due to misunderstanding. When a person listens to other person completely then most of the conflicts wont occur.

  1. What are the management strategies for quality focused interpersonal needs?Interpersonal skills are those needed for people to work together in a manner that is conducive to both personal and corporate success. For employees and managers to function effectively in a total quality setting, they must have good interpersonal skills. The following steps can be taken by managers to ensure that members of the workforce have sufficient interpersonal relation to be effective communicators.
  • Recognition of the need: To have employees with good interpersonal skills, managers must recognize the need for these skills and choose employees based even on interpersonal skills apart from the regular technical and paper credentials.
  • Careful selection: Once the candidates with best credentials and technical skills have been identified, then they are carefully screened to determine whether they have interpersonal skills such as listening, patience etc and the ability to get along in a diverse workplace and also being positive agent in helping others to get along.
  • Training: It is not common for most people to have interpersonal skill inborn. This can be acquired by constant teaching. This can be done in the form of training the employees.
  • Measurement and reward: The managers should identify the people who have done well in terms of the interpersonal skills for the normal appraisal where people with good skills and good performance are rewarded.
  1. What are the principles of overcoming negativity and conflicts in the workplace?Negativity is any behavior on the part of any employee at any level that works against the optimum performance of the organization. Managers should be constantly alert to signs of negativity in the workplace because negativity is contagious. It can spread throughout an organization quickly, dampening morale and inhibiting performance. The managers who identify negativity in their organizations should take the appropriate steps to eliminate it. The strategies that can be used to eliminate it are:
  • Communicate: Frequent, ongoing communication is the best defense against negativity in organizations and also the best tool that can overcome already set in negativity.
  • Establish clear expectations: Make sure all employees know that what is expected of them as individuals and as members of the team.
  • Provide for anxiety venting: The workplace can be stressful even in the best organizations. The managers need to give their direct reports opportunities to vent in a nonthreatening, affirming environment.
  • Build Trust: Negativity cannot flourish in an atmosphere of trust. Managers can build trust between themselves and employees and among employees to prevent negativity.
  • Involve employees: Involving employees by asking their opinions, soliciting their feedback and making them part of the solution can be effective deterrents and cure for negativity.

Human conflict is a normal and unavoidable aspect of the highly competitive modern workplace, even in a total quality setting. One of the human relations skills needed by people in such a setting is the ability to disagree with fellow workers without being disagreeable.

The guidelines that can be used by managers in attempting to resolve conflict are:

  • Determine how important the issue is to all people involved.
  • Determine whether all people involved are willing and able to discuss the issue in a positive manner.
  • Select a private place where the issue can be discussed confidentially by everyone involved.
  • Make sure that both sides understand that they are responsible for both the problem and the solution.
  • Solicit opening comments from both sides. Let them express their concerns, feelings, ideas and thoughts but in a non accusing manner.
  • Guide participants towards a clear and specific definition of the problem.
  • Encourage participants to propose solutions.
  • Evaluate the costs versus the gains of all proposed solutions and discuss them openly. Choose the best solution.
  • Reflect on the issue and discuss the conflict resolution process.
  1. How can you manage conflict in the workplace?                                                      Human conflict is a normal and unavoidable aspect of the highly competitive modern workplace, even in a total quality setting. One of the human relations skills needed by people in such a setting is the ability to disagree with fellow workers without being disagreeable. However, even if most members of an organization have this skill, conflicts still may arise among workers. When people work together, no matter how committed they are to a common goal, human conflict is going to occur. Consequently, managers in a total quality setting must be proficient in resolving conflict.

The guidelines that can be used by managers in attempting to resolve conflict are:

  • Determine how important the issue is to all people involved.
  • Determine whether all people involved are willing and able to discuss the issue in a positive manner.

  1. How do you communicate in conflict situations?                                                            The guidelines for communication during conflicts are:                                                  The initial attitude of those involved in the conflict can predetermine the outcome. This means that if a person enters into such a situation spoiling for a fight, he or she will probably get one. Communication prior to such a situation aimed at convincing either or both parties to view it as an opportunity to cooperatively solve a problem can help predetermine a positive outcome.
  • When possible, conflict guidelines should be in place before conflict occurs. It is not uncommon for conflict to be exacerbated by disagreements over how it should be resolved. Before entering into a situation in which conflict might occur, make sure all parties understand how decisions will be made, who has the right to give input, and what issues are irrelevant.
  • Assessing the blame should not be allowed. It is predictable that two people in a conflict situation will blame each other,
  • More of the same solutions should be eliminated. When a particular strategy for resolving conflict is tried but proves to be ineffective don’t continue using it.
  • Maintain trust by keeping promises. Trust is fundamental to all aspects of total quality. It is especially important in managing conflict.
  1. Why does quality suffer if there is a major conflict?

The effects of major conflict on an organization are:

  • Loss of morale due to infighting, buck passing and rumormongering.
  • Questionable decision made for reasons other than what is best for the organization.
  • Counterproductive internal competition that saps the organization of its competitive energy.
  • Loss of the best and brightest employees as they make a statement about their dissatisfaction by leaving.
  • Perpetuation of outdated processes, procedures and technologies as internal politics is used to promote organization intertia by those opposed to change.
  • Constant conflict as the political machinations of one group are countered by those of others.
  • Loss of quality, competitiveness and customers as the organizations focus is diverted from what really matters.

Tesla rolls out autopilot mode on Model S

This is an excellent initivative by Tesla. The most important thing for this to happen is that the person who is in the driving seat should also have a control just in case the software is hacked or crashes there should be an automatic switch to manual mode. Also the person in driver seat must be vigilant of the roads while on autopilot mode too.

Also the concerned authorities, by the time these automated cars become a reality for a common man, should sort out the issues related to insurance and legal responsibilities of these autopilot mode.

Samsung is spot on in saying that the mobile sector requires a boost in terms of memory and battery life. The mobile phones have become such an integral part of life today that every person a smartphone and many the high end models. The customers now have the requirement to access all the things on a mobile than on a notebook or a laptop as this is handy and the work can be done on the go.

Hence, concentrating on the bettering the mobile technology is more important. Samsung has done this right way by investing in the high end technology which is beneficial for both mobiles and smartwatches and also the automobile sector where infotainment reaches a new high every passing day.

Attaining functional safety

http://www.edn.com/electronics-blogs/embedded-insights/4440218/Attaining-functional-safety–Standards–certification–and-the-development-process?&elq=5e36cbf3770e45f584e95708da63d273&elqCampaignId=24798&elqaid=28134&elqat=1&elqTrackId=42371990e5644ebb8c52479cea9ef90a

The first thing I would say is such standardization of safety features and examining the process used to manufacture that product is a good thing. This detailed examination of the processes involved in the manufacturing of the product gives a clear view of the product quality. If there are sub standard process involved then it can easily be detected.

The other thing that has to be examined for electronic device safety is the back up feature of the product when the product fails. This is very important because there are many random causes for a failure of the product and this back up feature to avoid an abrupt stop in the functioning of the product is very important.
